AHMEDABAD: Social media claims suggesting that former Gujarat Chief Minister and Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has resigned from her constitutional post have been dismissed as baseless by sources close to her.
Rumours had circulated online that Patel had submitted a request to the Central Government seeking relief from her responsibilities as Governor and that the proposal had been accepted. The claims triggered speculation in political circles and among the public.
However, sources familiar with the matter said Patel continues to serve as Uttar Pradesh Governor and has not resigned.
According to the sources, Patel is currently in Ahmedabad on an officially approved one-week leave to spend time with her family ahead of Raksha Bandhan. Her visit to Gujarat was subsequently linked to the resignation rumours on social media.
“The reports about her resignation are completely baseless. She is still the Governor of Uttar Pradesh,” sources close to Patel said.
They added that Patel is expected to return to Uttar Pradesh after her leave and resume her constitutional responsibilities as scheduled.
The development comes amid growing concern over the spread of unverified claims on social media, particularly concerning constitutional authorities and senior public figures.
Sources indicated that Patel may issue a clarification on the matter if required.
