Surat : The diamond city of Surat is gleaming brighter than ever, as India’s first bullet train station takes shape at Antroli, along the Surat-Kadodara road connecting National Highway (NH-8). Construction of this marvel of modern infrastructure is progressing rapidly, with an anticipated completion date of December 2024.

This state-of-the-art, multi-level station will be a true architectural gem. Its external facade and interiors will pay homage to Surat’s most celebrated pride – the sparkling diamond. The first floor will be dedicated to passenger comfort, boasting spacious waiting areas, a variety of food stalls, bank ATMs, and well-maintained restrooms.

The project is moving full steam ahead. Fabrication work at the station is in high gear, while a significant portion of the viaduct construction on the Mumbai side is already complete. Billimora will be the next station on the route, with passenger service expected to begin by 2026.

The much-anticipated Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor promises to revolutionize travel between the two cities. With limited stops, the bullet train will slash travel time to a mere 2 hours and 7 minutes. Even with stops at all stations, the journey will be significantly faster, taking just 2 hours and 58 minutes.

Safety and reliability are paramount for this project. The bullet train will be powered by Japan’s renowned Shinkansen technology, known worldwide for its impeccable safety record. The trains themselves will be capable of reaching a maximum design speed of 350 kilometers per hour, with an operational speed of 320 kilometers per hour.

The foundation stone for this ambitious Rs 1.1 lakh crore project was laid in September 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad. The first phase, connecting Surat and Bilimora, is targeted for completion by 2026. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is spearheading this historic undertaking, with Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) playing a crucial role in the design and construction of the 8-kilometer viaduct.

The arrival of India’s first bullet train station in Surat marks a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure development. This gleaming diamond will not only transform travel between major cities but also serve as a symbol of India’s growing prowess in the field of high-speed rail technology.
