WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature in India that allows users to recharge mobile numbers directly inside chats, without switching to telecom apps or websites. The feature enables users to complete prepaid recharges for operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, making everyday mobile payments more seamless and integrated within the messaging platform.

How the new recharge feature works
The feature is being introduced through WhatsApp Payments, which is powered in partnership with fintech company PayU. Users will be able to recharge mobile numbers directly from the app by entering a phone number, selecting a telecom operator, choosing a plan, and completing the payment using supported methods. The option is designed to reduce friction by removing the need to switch between multiple apps for simple tasks like mobile recharges.
Where the feature is available
The rollout is currently happening in a phased manner for both Android and iOS users in India. Once available, the feature can be accessed through the Payments section inside WhatsApp, which is linked via the Rupee icon in the Chats tab. This same section also supports other services like metro ticket bookings, expanding WhatsApp’s role beyond messaging into a broader digital payments platform.
Limitations and key conditions
At present, the feature is limited only to prepaid mobile users, meaning postpaid customers cannot yet pay their monthly bills through WhatsApp. Users will still need to rely on telecom operator apps or websites for postpaid payments. The rollout is gradual, so availability may vary depending on the device and account.
WhatsApp aims to simplify daily transactions by integrating services like recharges and ticket bookings directly into chats, while also strengthening adoption of its payments ecosystem in India’s highly competitive digital payments market.
