Surat : Mumbai’s lifeline, the Western Railway (WR), is taking a stand against unauthorized travel with the launch of a unique initiative – the BATMAN squad. This dedicated team of ticket checking staff, aptly named Be Aware TTE Manning At Night, aims to deter ticketless travel and ensure a hassle-free experience for bonafide passengers, particularly during night hours.
The press release issued by Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, highlights the growing problem of ticketless travel, especially at night. To address this, the WR’s Mumbai Central Division has introduced this innovative concept. The BATMAN squad undergoes specialized training to operate effectively during night hours. Their primary role involves inspecting trains, maintaining vigilance for suspicious activity, and deterring unauthorized travel.
This not only improves the overall efficiency of the railway system but also contributes to a safer environment for passengers. Additionally, the squad interacts with passengers, educating them on responsible travel practices. Notably, the name “BATMAN” was a creative suggestion by a regular commuter, showcasing the initiative’s collaborative spirit.
The results have been swift and impressive. Within the first two nights of operation, the BATMAN squad apprehended over 2,300 ticketless travelers and identified other irregularities. During the intervening night of March 11th/12th and 12th/13th, 2024, the squad collected fines amounting to nearly Rs. 6.30 lakh. These dedicated individuals patrol Mumbai’s suburban stations on the Western Railway line with unwavering commitment, ensuring passengers travel with valid tickets.
Western Railway urges the public to embrace responsible travel practices and always carry proper and valid tickets. This initiative by the WR not only addresses revenue loss but also creates a safer and more comfortable travel experience for all passengers, especially during the often-crowded night hours.
