Surat : In a departure from conventional mourning practices, a unique funeral procession in Surat has sparked curiosity and debate. The procession was held in honor of Madhubhai Kakadia’s 95-year-old mother, who passed away recently. Instead of somber rituals, the family, consisting of seven sons and eight daughters, chose to celebrate her life with drums and music, drawing attention from the local community.

Madhubhai Kakadia, a well-known figure associated with the Satyashodhak Sabha and a vocal opponent of superstitions and religious dogma in Surat, decided to honor his mother’s life in a way that aligns with his long-held beliefs. “My mother lived a full life, and we wanted to mark her passing not with tears but with joy, as she would have wanted,” Kakadia said.

The procession, which was joined by a large number of family friends and relatives, moved through the streets of Surat, with drums beating in rhythm to celebrate the life of the deceased. The sight of a funeral procession that resembled more of a celebratory parade than a traditional somber affair left many onlookers intrigued. “It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It made me think about our customs and why we follow them,” commented a local resident who witnessed the procession.

Madhubhai Kakadia’s approach to his mother’s death is consistent with his public stance on religious practices. A member of the Satya Shodhak team, Kakadia has spent years debating the intersection of science and religion, often questioning the validity of traditional rituals. His opposition to practices like animal sacrifice and his public challenge to Bageshwar Dham during a recent event in Surat are well-known. “We have to question why we do things a certain way and whether they truly honor the people we love,” Kakadia explained.

The funeral procession, which saw the family dressed in vibrant colors rather than the customary white, continued to the cremation ground, where the last rites were performed without the usual religious rituals. Instead, the family shared stories and memories of their mother, turning the event into a celebration of her life rather than a mourning of her death.
