Thiruvananthapuram : Imagine an airport where elephants, horses, and vibrant cultural performances take center stage, not airplanes. Believe it or not, such a place exists! Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV) in Kerala, India, holds the unique distinction of being the only airport globally to shut down its runway for a traditional procession – twice a year.

This heartwarming story exemplifies the Adani Group’s commitment to respecting local communities and their age-old customs.

A Runway for Royalty: A Tradition Honored

This Airport Runway in India Shut Down for Twice-Yearly Traditional Procession

TRV grinds to a halt to facilitate a spectacular procession honoring centuries-old traditions. The runway transforms into a stage for a vibrant display featuring elephants, horses, and meticulously crafted replicas of traditional chariots (ambadi) accompanied by the rhythmic beats of dholangara (drum). This grand procession is held twice annually – during the Alpasi festival (October-November) and the Pankuni festival (March-April).

The tradition is believed to have historical roots. Legends suggest that King Chithira Thirunal of Travancore, when the airport was built, proposed keeping the land accessible to the public for all but two days a year. These two days were designated for the royal family’s procession.

Respectful Transitions: Balancing Tradition and Progress

The Adani Group, which currently manages the airport, has upheld this longstanding tradition. Twice a year, the airport meticulously plans and executes a temporary suspension of flight operations. Flights are rescheduled to ensure a smooth and respectful passage for the procession.

Following the ceremony, the runway undergoes a thorough cleaning and inspection before resuming regular flight services.

Progress and Tradition: A Winning Combination

Remarkably, this unique practice does not hinder passenger traffic or air movement. In fact, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport witnessed a significant rise in passenger volume during 2023-24. With over 4.4 million passengers traveling through the airport, it marked one of the highest passenger counts in its history.

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of progress and tradition. The Adani Group’s commitment to honoring local customs fosters a sense of cultural respect and showcases the beauty of integrating tradition into modern infrastructure.
