Surat | Gujarat — In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves across the city, a man and his family consumed poison inside their apartment at a building in Vesu on Tuesday evening, leaving three dead and one child battling trauma after surviving the tragedy.

The deceased, originally from Bihar and residing in Surat’s Vesu area, his wife, and their elder daughter. The younger daughter survived and is currently under medical care.

According to police, the deceased, who had been working in the stock market from home for the past two years, allegedly took the extreme step following prolonged mental and financial harassment. A three-page suicide note recovered from the flat during investigation reportedly names a man identified as Vaibhav Rungta, accusing him of sustained torture.

‘Dad is lying on the ground, come quickly’

A close family friend, recalled the frantic moments that unfolded. “At 4:11 pm, I received a call from deceased’s daughter. She was crying and said, ‘Dad is lying on the ground, come quickly.’ I immediately sent my wife and son and rushed there myself,” he said.

“When I reached, he was motionless on the floor. His daughter was also in a critical state. We shifted all of them to Green Leaf Hospital without delay,” he added.

Police said the trader died on the spot. His wife and elder daughter succumbed during treatment on Wednesday morning.

Poison meant for agriculture used

Preliminary investigation suggests the family consumed a toxic substance typically used for agricultural purposes. Officers from Vesu Police Station reached the scene after receiving an emergency alert and confirmed the deaths.

PI J.C. Jadhav of Vesu Police Station stated, “When our team arrived at in Vesu, the trader was found dead. His wife and two daughters were rushed to hospital. Unfortunately, his wife and the elder daughter passed away during treatment.”

Allegations of financial exploitation

The suicide note allegedly claims that the accused had seized trader’s car and credit cards and misused them for shopping, causing severe financial distress. Investigators believe mounting pressure and humiliation may have pushed the family toward the drastic step.

“Based on the suicide note recovered from the residence, we have registered a case against Vaibhav Rungta for alleged harassment and abetment. Further investigation is underway,” PI Jadhav confirmed.
