SURAT,GUJARAT : Following a controversy involving a Thai prostitute at the resident doctor’s hostel on the hospital campus, Dr. Ritvik Darjee, a third-year orthopedic resident doctor, has been suspended from SMIMER Hospital and Medical College managed by Surat Municipal Corporation. Dr. Darjee is accused of inviting Thai prostitutes to his hostel room, having obscene behavior,  drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

The June 8 event has prompted authorities of the hospital and the college to start a departmental investigation against Dr. Darjee. The investigation will not only cover his latest actions but also look at his past behavior, including an incident a few months ago which he allegedly attacked another resident doctor on the hostel grounds.

Dr. Darjee apparently brought a Thai female to the college campus dorm on the night of June 8. According to sources, the doctor took the girl inside the hostel covertly after calling her from Vesu. When Dr. Darjee entered his room, he got into a fight with the Thai girl that resulted in a physical assault when he smacked her in a fit of wrath.

Around 1 a.m., the fight generated a lot of disturbance in the boys’ hostel, attracting attention and upsetting the entire campus. It was revealed that Dr. Darjee had been smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol following the incident, therefore aggravating the seriousness of the charges made against him.

Authorities of the SMIMER Hospital and Medical College responded swiftly, suspending Dr. Darjee and directing of an extensive inquiry on the situation. The investigation will probe his behavior on June 8’s evening as well as his past misbehavior including violent behavior directed against another resident doctor.

This debate has brought attention to continuing problems on the SMIMER campus, including regular finding of luxury liquor bottles. Liquor bottles are often found strewn around the campus,  suggesting a lackadaisical attitude toward the implementation of campus rules notwithstanding security measures and frequent rounds by senior officials.

The episode involving Dr. Darjee has spurred a more general discussion on the need of more rigorous control and discipline among resident doctors.
