Surat : In the midst of its rapid growth as the world’s fourth-fastest-growing city, Surat is grappling with a somber reality: a distressing state of affairs for mothers and newborn children. Shocking statistics have emerged from the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) hospitals, shedding light on the daunting challenges faced by the city in ensuring the well-being of its youngest residents.

Over the past two years, approximately 18,659 babies were born in Surat’s municipal hospitals. However, the grim revelation is that out of this total, a staggering 2,926 newborns were born malnourished, while 263 children tragically lost their lives within just seven days of treatment. Additionally, 130 children were stillborn, and 26 mothers tragically lost their lives during childbirth. These figures are deeply unsettling and represent the stark reality faced by mothers and infants in the city.

These statistics serve as a stark reminder that the challenges faced by Surat are not isolated, but rather indicative of a broader issue that may extend beyond the city’s boundaries. In the fiscal year 2022-23, the state government allocated a significant sum of Rs. 3,311 crore to combat malnutrition, emphasizing the importance of addressing this pressing concern.

The state government has introduced several schemes to eliminate malnutrition in Gujarat, including provisions for balanced diets for expectant mothers. Considerable financial resources are being invested throughout Gujarat to address these issues. However, the startling statistics from Surat’s municipal hospitals underscore the urgency of the situation and raise questions about the effectiveness of these programs.

The existence of such alarming figures, despite the government’s efforts to provide comprehensive health services and well-balanced diets through various schemes, is a cause for concern. The revelation has left many wondering whether the benefits of these programs are genuinely reaching those in need.

Payal Sakaria, the Opposition Leader of the Municipal Corporation, commented on the disconcerting findings.

“Rachna Hirpara, a member of the health committee in the SMC, had requested information regarding birth rates, death rates, and pregnant women in Surat Municipal Corporation-run hospitals. The data was met with shock and disbelief among committee members” said Sakaria.

Sakaria questioned the effectiveness of government schemes aimed at addressing malnutrition among pregnant women and children, expressing concerns about whether the intended beneficiaries are indeed receiving the support they require.
