SURAT, GUJARAT : The residents of Varachha in Surat faced a harrowing ordeal for weeks while obtaining income and caste certificates from the zone office. Long queues snaked under the scorching sun, with minimal staff available to assist them. This situation, however, saw a immediate turnaround after a letter by BJP MLA, Kishore Kanani, popularly known as Kumar Kanani, brought the issue to the notice of the district administration.

“It was a terrible experience,” said Shailesh Patel, a resident of Varachha. “We had to stand in line for hours, and there was no shade or even water available. It felt like nobody cared about our plight.”

MLA Kanani’s “Letter Bomb” Prompts Action

In a scathing letter addressed to the district collector, Kanani, known for his assertive style, highlighted the hardships faced by Varachha residents.  “The letter bomb,” as some local media outlets called it, detailed the lack of staff, including the Mamlatdar and Talatis, at the zone office, leading to long queues and frustrated citizens.

District Administration Steps Up

The response from the district administration was swift. Within 24 hours of receiving Kanani’s letter, the authorities swung into action. Tents were erected at the Varachha zone office to provide shade for waiting citizens. Additionally, the number of operational windows at the office was increased from one to four, significantly reducing wait times. Water coolers were also installed to address the issue of dehydration in the scorching summer heat.

MLA Inspects New Facilities, Residents Satisfied

Following the improvements, MLA Kanani visited the zone office to inspect the newly implemented facilities. Speaking to reporters, he expressed his satisfaction with the district administration’s prompt action. “I am happy to see the changes implemented after my letter,” Kanani stated. “The Mamlatdar and Talatis are now present at the office, and all four windows are operational. This will significantly reduce queuing time for residents.”

Kanani further emphasized the need for a streamlined process. “I have instructed the zone staff to expedite the issuance of income certificates,” he added. “I also interacted with a few residents, and they seem happy with the improved facilities.”

The residents of Varachha hope that the improved situation at the zone office will be a permanent solution. “We are finally getting some relief,” said atel, the resident quoted earlier. “Hopefully, this is a long-term change, and we won’t have to go through this ordeal again.”

MLA Kanani’s intervention and the district administration’s swift response offer a glimpse of how addressing citizen concerns can lead to positive change. However, the question remains whether this is a one-time fix or a sign of a more responsive administration in Varachha. Only time will tell.
