Surat | Gujarat —  A 30-year-old woman and her two-year-old son died after falling from the 13th floor of Martand Hills apartment in Surat’s Althan area on Wednesday evening. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

The deceased were identified as Pooja Patel and her son Krishiv. They lived on the sixth floor of the society with her husband, Vilesh Kumar Patel, who runs a powerloom unit.

According to CCTV footage, Pooja and Krishiv were seen taking the lift to the 13th floor shortly before the incident. Police said she had told neighbours she was going to get some clothes stitched. “Initial findings suggest that she may have gone upstairs with the intention of ending her life. We are examining the footage further,” an Althan police officer said.

Residents rushed to the spot after hearing the commotion. The mother and child were found lying in front of the society’s Ganesha idol. An ambulance was called immediately, and both were rushed to Surat Civil Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

“The fall from such a height left them critically injured. Despite immediate medical intervention, they could not be saved,” a hospital source confirmed.

The incident shocked residents of Martand Hills, where Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were underway. “We were preparing for the evening aarti when the news spread. It turned the festive atmosphere into mourning,” said a neighbour.

Police have started recording statements of family members and society residents. “A panel postmortem will be conducted in the presence of the Mamlatdar. We will also look into whether there were any family disputes or other reasons behind the extreme step,” the officer added.

Neighbours described Pooja as a quiet homemaker who kept to herself. The sudden tragedy has left her husband and extended family inconsolable.
