Surat : A 25-year-old woman, Sarita (name changed), attempted to poison her two young children and herself in Pali Village at Sachin in Surat. The desperate act, driven by mental stress and overwhelming circumstances, left the community reeling.

Sarita, originally from Bihar, lives alone in Pali with her son and daughter, working tirelessly in a textile mill to make ends meet. With no one to care for her children while she works, she often takes them along, a testament to her struggle to balance motherhood and survival.

Tragically, the burden became too much to bear. According to police reports, Sarita mixed poison in the children’s milk and ingested some herself. Fortunately, a neighbor, concerned about her well-being, discovered the locked door and raised the alarm, leading to timely intervention.

Both Sarita and her children were rushed to the New Civil Hospital, where they received immediate medical attention. Hospital sources said that their condition is now reported to be normal.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Sarita’s mental state deteriorated due to multiple stressors. Her first husband succumbed to cancer, leaving her behind with their children. Later, her second husband abandoned them, adding to her financial woes and emotional turmoil.

“Thankfully, both the children and their mother are out of danger now,” said a police officer, “but the incident highlights the need for mental health support and resources for struggling families. The stigma surrounding mental illness often hinders access to crucial resources and leaves people struggling in silence.”

While the police have registered a case of attempted suicide and investigations are ongoing.
