Surat : Residents of Adajan, nature enthusiasts, and environmentalists in Surat have stepped up their efforts to ‘Save’ the 400-year-old African Baobab tree known as ‘Chor Amlo’ that stands tall in Adajan.

The oldest tree in Surat has created a stumbling block for officials working on the Surat Metro Rail project in Adajan. Because the Metro rail project is in full motion, the tree is likely to be cut down to make room for the big-ticket metro rail project.

In Adajan, an African Baobab tree stands in the centre of the road where the alleviated metro bridge is being built. However, Surat’s tree enthusiasts, particularly Adajan residents and environmentalists, are outraged and intend to protest the felling of the city’s oldest tree.

“African Baboba tree is primarily found in Africa,” stated Snehal Patel of Nature Club Surat (NCS). Surat is fortunate to have such a magnificent tree. The Surat metro rail project is likely to take this magnificent tree’s life. Because it is in the path of the metro project, officials will cut the tree down to make space for the Adajan metro.”

“We are galvanising support from like-minded people in Surat to protect the African Baobab tree in Adajan,” Patel said.
