Ahmedabad : Adani University recently organized a two-day international conference on Emerging Challenges in Sustainable Infrastructure Development, Green Transition, and Financing (ICIDS). The event brought together national and international experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss critical challenges and opportunities in building sustainable infrastructure.

The primary goal of ICIDS was to unite researchers and academicians from India and across the globe on a single platform to deliberate on key issues, including economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social equity. With participation from over 250 attendees on the first day and the presentation of more than 50 research papers on the second day, the conference highlighted the urgent need to align infrastructure development with global sustainability goals.

Sustainability and India’s Energy Transition

Adani University Provost, Professor Ravi P. Singh, emphasized the significant strides India has made in the infrastructure and energy sectors in recent years. “India currently boasts an energy capacity of about 450 GW, with nearly 50% of this generated from non-fossil fuel sources,” he noted. He added that the country is on track to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, aligning with the global sustainability agenda.

To further support India’s energy future, Adani University has introduced a five-year integrated program in Energy Engineering and Energy Management, equipping students worldwide to contribute to sustainable energy solutions.

Global Perspective on Infrastructure Challenges

Professor Arun Sharma, Vice President of Adani University and a recipient of the Royal Order of Australia, highlighted that the challenges faced by India in sustainable infrastructure development mirror those encountered across Asia. “The solutions must be global, considering economic, environmental, and social dimensions,” he remarked.

Similarly, Professor Bharat Dahiya, from the Research Centre for Sustainable Development and Innovation at Thammasat University, Thailand, discussed five critical dimensions necessary to realize the concept of the “Asian Century.” He stressed the importance of cultural and aspirational unity across Asian nations, reflecting on shared heritage.

Key Discussion Topics

The conference featured in-depth discussions on a range of topics, including:

Urban and regional transport systems

Energy transition and renewable infrastructure

Urban transformation models and future practices

Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in infrastructure projects

Experts also presented a roadmap to address pressing global challenges, particularly in energy transition and sustainability.

A Global Platform for Research and Innovation

The second day of the conference showcased groundbreaking research through the presentation of over 50 papers by researchers worldwide. These contributions explored diverse fields, offering innovative solutions to advance sustainable infrastructure.

Attendees hailed the conference as a vital initiative to drive collaborative efforts toward achieving sustainability goals outlined in global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Adani University’s ICIDS 2024 successfully created a platform to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, paving the way for transformative infrastructure solutions. The event underscored the shared responsibility of nations to address global challenges through cooperation, innovation, and actionable strategies.

By hosting such a significant international conference, Adani University reinforced its commitment to nurturing talent and fostering research that contributes to the sustainable development of infrastructure worldwide.
