Surat : Rajhans Desai-Jain Group, a prominent real estate company in Surat, finds itself embroiled in controversy following two tragic deaths of construction workers within a short period.

The company, known for its opulent residential and commercial projects in upscale areas like Vesu, is alleged to be disregarding the safety and security of its workers in violation of government laws, all in pursuit of monetary gains. Furthermore, reports suggest the company enjoys the patronage of senior BJP leaders in Gujarat.

The first incident occurred at a construction site of Rajhans Desai-Jain Group in Vesu, where the lifeless body of a construction worker was discovered in an overhead water tank. The water level in the tank was knee-deep, raising suspicions of foul play. It is believed that the deceased was killed and disposed of in the tank. This distressing incident highlights the urgent need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the worker’s death.

The second incident took place on March 18, 2023, when a young laborer fell from the second floor of a newly constructed building called Rajhans GoldLinks near GD Goenka School in Vesu. The 22-year-old worker, Mohammed Wasid Nawaz, who resided in the Labor Colony behind GD Goenka School, was employed by Rajhans Desai-Jain Group along with his brothers.

While wearing a helmet and safety belt, Nawaz was performing plastering work on the second floor when he tragically fell and suffered a severe head injury. Despite being rushed to a private hospital for treatment, he was declared dead upon admission.

Former Congress Councillor Aslam Cyclewala has taken swift action in response to these incidents, submitting a memorandum to the Deputy Labour Commissioner’s office. In the memorandum, Cyclewala demands strict action against the owners of Rajhans Desai-Jain Group for their alleged violations of labor laws and failure to ensure the safety of construction workers.

Additionally, Cyclewala has written to the police department, urging them to register a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code against Jayesh Desai and his partners at Rajhan Desai-Jain Group.

The tragic deaths of these young construction workers have brought to light the urgent need for stricter adherence to safety regulations within the construction industry. It is imperative that authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the operations of Rajhans (Desai-Jain) Group, focusing on their compliance with labor laws and the welfare of their workers. The involvement of senior BJP leaders in this controversy further necessitates a transparent and impartial inquiry to ascertain the facts and ensure justice for the deceased workers and their families.
