Surat : The New Civil Hospital in Surat has emerged as a beacon of hope for patients suffering from hemophilia, a rare genetic disorder characterized by prolonged bleeding due to inadequate blood clotting. Recognized as the only hospital in India equipped to handle both minor and major surgeries for hemophilia patients, it has set a benchmark for excellence in specialized care.

Comprehensive Care for Hemophilia Patients

Hemophilia poses significant challenges, as even minor injuries can lead to life-threatening bleeding. The disorder demands specialized facilities and highly experienced medical professionals, which Surat Civil Hospital has successfully combined under one roof.

Dr. Ketan Naik, RMO of Surat Civil Hospital, explained, “Hemophilia patients require specific clotting factors before and after surgery to prevent continuous bleeding. Without these factors, any surgical procedure could be fatal.” For over a decade, the hospital’s Hemophilia Care Center has ensured the availability of essential clotting factors and built a multidisciplinary team with expertise in handling hemophilia-related surgeries.

A Proven Track Record of Success

To date, the hospital has performed over 60 surgeries on hemophilia patients, including more than 20 major and 40 minor procedures. Among the standout achievements is India’s first successful hip replacement surgery on a hemophilia patient. Other procedures, including knee replacements, leg fracture repairs, cesarean sections, and dental surgeries, have also been conducted with remarkable success.

Dr. Dharitri Parmar, Superintendent of Surat Civil Hospital, highlighted the hospital’s infrastructure and medical expertise, which make it uniquely capable of addressing the complex needs of hemophilia patients.

Special Cases and Advanced Treatments

One notable case involved a patient with hemophilia A and a high inhibitor level, requiring rare Factor VII injections worth ₹1.5 crore. The five-hour orthopedic surgery was followed by a month of intensive post-operative care, ultimately leading to the patient’s recovery.

A Lifeline for Patients Nationwide

Surat’s Hemophilia Care Center isn’t just a blessing for Gujarat but also attracts patients from across India. Currently, 53 patients receive prophylactic treatment to prevent complications and disabilities.

The hospital’s success is epitomized by the story of Ankur Narendrabhai Sitapara, a hemophilia B patient from Rajkot. After a severe leg injury in 2021 left him immobile, Ankur was advised amputation by other hospitals. However, the Surat Civil Hospital team successfully performed his surgery, using 4,000 units of EHL Factor IX. Today, Ankur is recovering well.

Setting a National Benchmark

The exceptional care provided at Surat Civil Hospital has made it an ideal model for hemophilia treatment in India. With its blend of state-of-the-art facilities, readily available life-saving factors, and experienced medical teams, the hospital continues to offer a new lease on life to hemophilia patients.
