SURAT : A popular restaurant in Surat’s upscale Parle Point area has come under scrutiny after customers alleged that rotten potatoes and stale, foul-smelling mushrooms were found in its kitchen. A video of the alleged incident has surfaced on social media, triggering concerns over food safety at the premium dining outlet.

Customers at Barbeque Nation reportedly recorded the condition of the ingredients and questioned the restaurant staff over the alleged lapses. The video shows blackened potatoes and mushrooms that customers claim were emitting a foul odour.

An angry customer, heard in the video, said, “This is a terrible establishment. There is absolutely no quality, safety or service here. The mushrooms are giving off a foul smell.”

The customer further alleged that the restaurant management failed to provide a satisfactory response when the issue was raised. The video also shows some diners leaving their food and walking away from their tables.

The allegations prompted a response from the Food Department of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). Officials said no formal complaint had been received from customers so far, but the department would inspect the premises following the information about the incident.

Food Department official Bhavesh Brahmbhatt said, “We have not yet received any official complaint from a customer about this matter. However, since we have been informed about the incident, a Food Department team will immediately conduct an on-site inspection.”

He added, “If any lapses or irregularities are found, strict legal action will be taken.”

The allegations have raised fresh questions about food safety practices at restaurants serving large numbers of customers. The condition of food ingredients and kitchen hygiene will now be examined by civic authorities during the inspection.

For consumers, the incident also highlights the importance of maintaining proper storage, hygiene and food-handling standards, particularly at establishments operating in the premium dining segment.

The allegations remain subject to verification by the civic authorities. Any action against the restaurant will depend on the findings of the official inspection.
