Surat : Surat residents, brace yourselves for a new era of traffic regulation in 2025. The Gujarat government, under the leadership of Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, has decided to take a zero-tolerance approach toward traffic violations. A meeting held on Monday between Sanghavi, the Surat Police, and Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) laid the groundwork for these upcoming measures aimed at ensuring road safety in the city.

With traffic becoming an increasing challenge in Surat, the government plans to implement stricter enforcement of road rules. Violations such as jumping traffic signals, spitting on roads, driving without helmets, and driving on the wrong side will now attract not only fines but also FIRs. This bold move comes as part of the city’s efforts to curb accidents and promote responsible behavior among its residents.

Accidents Drive Stricter Measures

Surat has seen a rise in traffic accidents, many of which are linked to reckless behavior such as speeding through signals and wrong-side driving. Though the introduction of traffic signals and circles has reduced accident numbers, the persistent flouting of rules remains a concern. The Surat Police Commissioner, Anupam Singh Gehlot, noted that many drivers attempt to cross signals in the final seconds, endangering lives in the process.

The proposed measures aim to change this mindset. FIRs will be registered against those who disregard traffic rules, with offenders identified using CCTV surveillance. The collaboration between the Surat Police and SMC will ensure stricter action, targeting not just drivers but also those littering or spitting on public roads.

Helmet Mandate: A 45-Day Countdown

Driving without helmets is another pressing issue in Surat. The city police, in coordination with SMC, will begin enforcing helmet rules after a 45-day preparatory period. This initiative hopes to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by two-wheeler accidents.

Commissioner Gehlot emphasized the importance of this rule, highlighting the growing risks posed by reckless driving. He also noted that this strict approach is not just punitive but aims to instill discipline among road users.

A Collaborative Effort for Change

During the meeting, it was also discussed how the city police and SMC will work together to ensure smoother traffic management. The use of CCTV cameras will be pivotal in identifying and penalizing offenders. In addition to filing FIRs for traffic violations, authorities plan to focus on public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the consequences of breaking traffic laws.

Residents can expect significant changes in the city’s traffic management system starting next year. These measures mark a decisive step toward making Surat’s roads safer and more orderly. While the strict enforcement might initially meet resistance, officials are confident that it will lead to long-term benefits for the city.
