Ahmedabad, Gujarat : Following heated clashes between BJP and Congress supporters in Ahmedabad on Tuesday evening, some individuals in Surat and Ahmedabad have filed applications in their respective police stations seeking legal action against Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Allegations stem from remarks made by Rahul Gandhi regarding the Hindu community, sparking outrage and a flurry of police complaints across Gujarat.

In Gandhinagar, Ranchod Patel filed an application at Infocity police station, seeking to register an FIR against Rahul Gandhi for his comments perceived as derogatory towards Hindus. The controversy erupted after Gandhi’s remarks during a parliamentary session on July 1st, where he purportedly stated that those identifying as Hindus are involved in continuous violence and spreading hatred.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned Gandhi’s statement, describing it as an insult to the entire Hindu society. “Calling the entire Hindu society violent is a serious issue,” Modi remarked, amplifying the political tension surrounding the incident.

Yet another application was filed from Surat on Wednesday. Mukesh Gujarati, a BJP worker from Singanpore filed an application at  Singanpore police station on behalf of Hindus nationwide, criticizing Gandhi for what he deemed an unwarranted attack on Hinduism. “Such statements are not appropriate from Rahul Gandhi, who has previously been associated with controversial remarks regarding Hinduism,” Gujarati stated in his application.

The controversy has not only fueled political animosity but also renewed debates over religious sentiments in electoral discourse. Political factions have mobilised their bases, amplifying the controversy as a focal point in the ongoing political narrative.

Gandhi’s remarks have triggered a nationwide debate, drawing sharp reactions from various quarters. While Congress defended Gandhi’s statements as being taken out of context, BJP leaders and supporters have mobilized against what they perceive as an attack on Hindu beliefs. The incident has further polarized political opinion, with both sides intensifying their rhetoric ahead of upcoming elections.

In response to the mounting pressure, police authorities in both Ahmedabad and Surat have acknowledged receiving multiple applications for FIRs against Gandhi. Legal experts suggest that while filing an FIR depends on the merit of the complaint, the political implications could prolong the legal process.
