Somnath | Gujarat — Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a historic and spiritually significant day in Gujarat on Monday as he performed the Kumbhabhishek at the sacred Somnath Temple during the ‘Somnath Amrit Parv-2026’, celebrating 75 years of the temple’s reconstruction. The visit blended spirituality, history, nationalism and public outreach, drawing thousands of devotees and citizens to Somnath and later Vadodara.

The Prime Minister offered prayers at the first Jyotirlinga and hoisted the temple flag using water brought from 11 sacred pilgrimages. A grand roadshow followed, along with a breathtaking Surya Kiran Air Show by the Indian Air Force, turning the coastal town into a vibrant centre of celebration and devotion.

Addressing the gathering, Modi emphasised the importance of cultural roots in nation building. “A nation can remain strong only if it remains connected to its roots,” he said. “Somnath teaches us our way of life. When new generations connect with their history and values, the inner strength of the nation becomes stronger.”

Highlighting India’s nature-centric traditions, the Prime Minister noted that the world is returning to sustainable lifestyles. “Our faith resides in rivers, forests and trees. We must adopt a lifestyle that protects these traditions,” he added.

In a powerful historical reference, Modi recalled the resilience of Somnath Temple, which was rebuilt multiple times despite invasions. “Invaders tried repeatedly to destroy the temple, yet it rose again each time. They failed to understand the strength of our ideology and spiritual consciousness,” he said.

The Prime Minister also linked the day to India’s scientific achievements, noting that May 11 marks the anniversary of the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998. “Our scientists demonstrated India’s capability to the world. Despite global pressure, India moved forward with confidence,” he said, calling the tests a symbol of national resolve and strength.

He further connected India’s space achievements, referencing the naming of the Chandrayaan landing site as “Shiva Shakti Bindu,” underscoring the blend of faith and science in India’s progress.

Reflecting on history, Modi credited Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for envisioning a united India and supporting the reconstruction of Somnath Temple after independence. “India is not only independent today, but also embracing the pride of its heritage,” he said.

After concluding his Somnath engagements, the Prime Minister travelled to Vadodara, where he inaugurated Sardardham-3 and addressed a public gathering. His visit marked his first trip to Gujarat following his recent political victory in West Bengal, with grand welcome arrangements themed around Bengal culture.

The day’s events showcased a powerful blend of spirituality, national pride and development, reinforcing Gujarat’s central role in India’s cultural and historical narrative.
