Heavy Rains Trigger High Alert for 43 Reservoirs in Gujarat

Ahmedabad : Due to heavy to severe rains in catchment areas on Monday, around 43 reservoirs in Gujarat were placed on high alert. Apart from that, the Sardar Sarovar Dam, which is Gujarat’s lifeline, has 53% water storage, while the 13 reservoirs in South Gujarat, including the Ukai Dam, have 53.29% water storage as of now. 

According to water resources department officials, a high alert has been raised in seven reservoirs with 90 percent to 100 percent water storage.  The Sardar Sarovar dam is now filled with 1,78,286 MCFT of water, accounting for 53.37 percent of the dam’s entire storage. In addition, 2,64,362 MCFT water has been recorded in the state’s other 206 reservoirs. However, due to the strong rainfall, the state’s reservoirs reported approximately 47.19% total water storage. 

Due to severe rainfall in the state, the Sardar Sarovar dam got around 23,486 cusecs of water, 36,307 cusecs in Ukai, 7,018 cusecs in Damanganga, 6,674 cusecs in Kadana, 6,648 cusecs in Panam, and 5500 cusecs in Hadaf. Apart from that, 30 dams in the state have been notified that they are 70-100% full. Aside from that, 28 dams, including Sardar Sarovar, have received warnings for being 50-70% full, while 36 dams are 25-50% full. 

Aside from that, 53.29 percent of water has been held in 13 reservoirs in South Gujarat, 50.88 percent in 141 reservoirs in Saurashtra, 49.92 percent in 20 reservoirs in Kutch, 37.29 percent in 17 reservoirs in Central Gujarat, and 26.49 percent in 15 reservoirs in North Gujarat. 

On Monday, strong torrential rains fell in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. From 6am to 8am on Monday, the Lunawada taluka received approximately 4 inches of rain. 

 In the previous 24 hours, Nadiad taluka in Kheda district had 4 inches of rain, Vaso taluka 3 inches, Dahod taluka 3 inches, and Santrampur taluka in Mahisagar district 3 inches.

According to the Gandhinagar State Emergency Operation Center, seven talukas received two inches of rain each: Mahudha, Jhalod, Morwa-Hadaf, Lunawada, Singhwad, Fatehpura, and Kadana. Ten taluks, including Petlad, Anand, Sojitra, Mehmedabad, Kheda, Limkheda, Virpur, Devgarh Baria, Kapdwanj, and Matar, have each received one inch of rain. Over half an inch of rain has been recorded in 25 taluks across the state.

Between 6 and 10 a.m. today, July 29, 2024, Talod, Himmatnagar, Meghraj taluka received three to three inches of rain. Apart from that, Mansa, Mehsana, Khanpur, and Jotana have all reported two inches of rain.

 The state has received more than 55 percent of the season’s usual rainfall till July 29l. The Kutch zone has received the most rainfall, with 75%. Apart from that, the season’s total average rainfall is 73% in the Saurashtra zone, 67% in South Gujarat, 37% in East-Central Gujarat, and 30% in North Gujarat.
