Gandhinagar : The Union Ministry of Energy has awarded an A+ rating to all four power distribution companies in Gujarat, placing them among the top performers out of 42 government power distribution companies nationwide.  Gujarat Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai provided this information in response to a question posed during the budget session of the state assembly.

Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai announced that to ensure the efficient operation of power generation and distribution by state-run companies, as well as a robust power grid, all four power distribution companies in Gujarat have received an A+ rating from the Union Ministry of Energy, ranking them among the top 42 government power distribution companies in the nation.  The South Gujarat Power Company holds the top position, followed by Central Gujarat Power Company in second place, and North Gujarat Power Company in third. Meanwhile, West Gujarat Power Company is placed fifth.

The Minister provided insights into the power connections established through the Shack Electrification Scheme in the state. Since its inception in 1997, this initiative has successfully delivered home power connections to a total of 10,96,581 families by December 2024, with an investment of around Rs. 583.34 crore.

The Energy Minister provided an update on the electrification of huts in Kutch district, stating that as of December 31, 2024, a total of 1,419 beneficiaries from various talukas have received electricity connections, with an expenditure of Rs. 65.43 lakh over the past two years.

The Minister provided details regarding the initiative, stating that individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, regardless of caste, can access electricity connections for home use. This applies to beneficiaries with an annual income of up to Rs. 1,50,000 in urban regions and up to Rs. 1,20,000 in rural areas.

Under this scheme, individuals seeking electricity connections for home use can reach out to the Taluka Panchayat office in rural regions. In urban settings, the application submitted by the Municipality is handled by the corresponding regional office of the electricity distribution company, where the required documents are collected, and the process of providing electricity connections is carried out.  The Energy Minister stated that all costs are covered by the state government, ensuring that the beneficiary is not required to pay anything for their household electricity connection.
