Surat : The much-anticipated marriage season in Surat, has been unexpectedly disrupted as unseasonal rains and a fierce hailstorm wreaked havoc across the city and the southern Gujarat region. The unexpected downpour not only devastated the livelihoods of farmers but also cast a shadow over over 300 wedding events planned at various open party plots in Surat.

These party plots, typically a hub for vibrant and elaborate wedding celebrations, found themselves submerged in rainwater following the onslaught of the unanticipated weather. Families, gearing up for their special occasions, were left with no choice but to cancel their meticulously planned events.

Rakesh Sharma, a manager at one of the party plots in Vesu, lamented the damages caused by the relentless hailstorm. “The entrance gate, the ornate mandap, and even the seating arrangements suffered significant damage. It was heartbreaking to witness the beautifully adorned settings crumble due to the ferocity of the storm. Consequently, the scheduled wedding event had to be canceled due to the extensive destruction.”

The Surat Party Plot Association President, Umeshbhai Zadfia, voiced the collective dismay of plot owners who faced substantial financial losses. “More than 300 party plots have borne the brunt of this unanticipated weather turmoil. The onset of the wedding season brought high hopes, but these have been shattered by the extensive damages caused by the hailstorm and heavy rains.”

He added, “The meticulous decorations, the grand mandaps, and various embellishments—all integral to Surat’s renowned wedding extravaganzas—have suffered considerable damage, leaving owners and families grappling with the aftermath.”

The meteorological department’s prediction of prolonged heavy rains prompted many to cancel their events in anticipation of further damage, compounding the financial distress experienced by party plot owners.

The Surat community, renowned for its rich wedding culture and meticulously planned celebrations, now faces a daunting task of restoration and recovery. The city, known for its opulent and picturesque wedding venues, is reeling from this unexpected natural calamity that has disrupted the joyous festivities.
