Gandhinagar | Gujarat — Gujarat is preparing for a major transformation in road infrastructure with the launch of 20 climate-resilient road projects worth ₹1,147 crore across several districts. The state government has approved the large-scale use of green technology in road construction, aiming to create stronger, longer-lasting and environmentally sustainable roads while significantly reducing construction costs.

The initiative is being seen as a major step towards modern infrastructure development and sustainable growth. By reusing old road materials and incorporating advanced engineering methods, Gujarat plans to minimise waste, conserve natural resources and lower carbon emissions.

Officials said the projects will cover roads in Patan, Gir Somnath, Mahisagar, Bharuch, Morbi, Surendranagar, Surat, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Anand, Mehsana, Kutch, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Narmada districts. The works will include road widening, resurfacing, RCC gutter lines, side shoulders, protection structures, rumble strips, white topping and advanced glass grid technology.

A senior official associated with the project said, “Green technology is changing the way roads are built in Gujarat. Instead of discarding damaged road material, it is being scientifically reused to strengthen the new roads. This makes the construction process more economical and sustainable.”

The technology involves excavating existing roads and stabilising the material through lime treatment, rolling and cement-based reinforcement. High-tech fibre layers known as Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayers (SAMI) are then used before asphalt application to prevent cracks and absorb traffic pressure, increasing the lifespan of roads.

Experts believe the new construction model will reduce maintenance expenses while improving road quality in both urban and rural areas. The use of waste plastic, fly ash, cold mix asphalt, cement stabilisation and geogrid reinforcement is expected to make the roads more durable and weather resistant.

One of the key projects under the initiative is the ₹50 crore reconstruction of the Jambusar-Tankali-Deola road in Bharuch district. The road serves as a vital link to the bulk drug park near Jambusar, ONGC facilities, salt farming regions and shrimp farming zones. Improved connectivity is expected to boost industrial growth and logistics in the region.

Officials said the state’s push for eco-friendly infrastructure reflects a broader vision of combining rapid development with environmental responsibility, setting a new benchmark for sustainable road construction in India.
