Gandhinagar | Gujarat — Gujarat has emerged as one of the safest states in the country for women, children and serious crimes, according to the latest Crime in India – 2024 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The report highlights that Gujarat’s overall crime rate remains significantly lower than the national average, reinforcing the state’s image as one of India’s strongest law-and-order regions.

As per the NCRB data, the national average crime rate in 2024 stood at 252.3, while Gujarat recorded a much lower crime rate of 227.7, placing the state 12th among 36 states and Union Territories. Officials stated that Gujarat’s comparatively higher registration numbers are largely due to strict enforcement of prohibition laws, under which lakhs of liquor-related cases are registered proactively every year by the Gujarat Police.

Authorities clarified that these prohibition-related cases are included in the overall NCRB crime calculations under Special and Local Laws (SLL), which inflates the apparent crime numbers despite reflecting active policing rather than deteriorating law and order.

The report places Gujarat among the safest states for women in India. While the national crime rate against women stands at 64.6, Gujarat’s rate is only 22.0, placing the state at 33rd rank nationally in terms of lower crime incidence.

Similarly, crimes against children in Gujarat were recorded at 25.8 compared to the national average of 42.3, giving the state a strong position in child safety indicators as well.

In serious violent crimes such as murder, rape, kidnapping, robbery and assault, Gujarat’s crime rate stood at just 16.5 against the national average of 52.9. The state ranked 31st nationally in violent crime rate, indicating comparatively fewer serious offences.

Officials also pointed out that Gujarat performed better than the national average in crimes affecting the human body and property-related offences, including theft and burglary.

The NCRB report further noted that Gujarat’s murder crime rate was only 1.3 compared to the national average of 1.9, while rape cases stood at 1.9 against the national figure of 4.3.

A senior official familiar with the analysis said the data reflects “the alertness, proactive policing and strict implementation of law in Gujarat.”

The findings are expected to strengthen the Gujarat government’s claims regarding public safety, women’s security and efficient policing mechanisms across urban and rural regions of the state.
