Mehsana | Gujarat — Tensions surrounding the local body elections in Mehsana exploded into deadly violence late Friday night, when a brutal attack linked to a political rivalry claimed the life of a young man and left two others injured. The incident has shaken the town and intensified concerns about rising political hostility during grassroots elections.

According to police, Miten Chaudhary—nephew of a candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party—was fatally attacked by a group of unidentified assailants on Tawadia Road in Ward No. 4. The attackers allegedly used knives, sticks, and metal pipes in what authorities suspect was a targeted assault linked to election tensions.

Miten succumbed to severe injuries during treatment, while his friend Dhimant Chaudhary remains hospitalised. In a shocking twist, Bharat Chaudhary, husband of the opposing candidate from the Indian National Congress, also sustained injuries during the clash and is undergoing treatment.

Ambush on Tawadia Road

Deputy Superintendent of Police Milap Patel confirmed that the attack took place late at night when Miten and Dhimant were travelling from Manav Ashram Chowkdi toward Tawadia.

“Five men stopped their car and launched a sudden assault using sharp weapons and sticks. Miten suffered grievous injuries and later died during treatment,” Patel said. “We have registered a case and are investigating every angle, including possible criminal conspiracy and involvement of multiple persons.”

Investigators from the Gujarat Police and Local Crime Branch have begun analysing CCTV footage and call detail records (CDR) to identify the attackers and establish the motive behind the violence.

Heavy Security and Rising Tensions

Senior police officials, including the district Superintendent of Police, rushed to the crime scene shortly after the incident. Authorities have since deployed tight security across sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.

On Saturday morning, Miten’s body was brought to Tawadia village after post-mortem examination. The funeral took place under heavy police protection as hundreds of villagers and members of the Chaudhary community gathered to pay their last respects. Grief and anger were palpable as mourners demanded swift justice.

A local resident present at the funeral said, “We are devastated. Elections should never turn into bloodshed. We want the culprits arrested immediately.”

Political Heat Intensifies

The killing has added a volatile edge to the ongoing local body elections, raising serious questions about political rivalry turning violent at the grassroots level. Community leaders have appealed for calm, while police continue to hunt for the attackers.

“We are committed to ensuring peace and bringing the accused to justice,” DySP Patel reiterated. “No one involved in this crime will be spared.”
