Ahmedabad : The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the polling dates for the Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat, which are slated for 27th February, if necessary. The next elections will feature a competition between the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the primary opposition, Congress, as they vie for a total of four seats.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has revealed the election agenda for 56 Rajya Sabha seats across 15 states, where the existing members’ tenures are about to end. The electoral spectacle in Gujarat will commence on 27th February, with the tabulation of ballots occurring on the same day.

The outcome of the forthcoming elections in Gujarat will decide the future of important political players, since both the BJP and Congress now have two Rajya Sabha seats in the state. The Union Cabinet Ministers Parshottam Rupala and Mansukh Mandaviya are affiliated with the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whilst Naran Rathwa and Amiben Yagnik are representatives of the primary opposition party, the Indian National Congress. The distribution of power in these critical seats is still uncertain.

With a commanding presence of 156 out of 182 members in the state legislature, the BJP is well positioned to clinch all four Rajya Sabha seats. Nevertheless, the Congress party is now confronted with a difficult situation as it now has just 15 members in the state house due to recent resignations.

Gujarat now has 11 Rajya Sabha seats, and the duration of a member’s term is six years. The elections for these seats take place biennially, with an allocation of 4-4-3 seats, accordingly.

The diminishing influence of Congress:

Congress presently lacks representation in the lower house of parliament in Gujarat and only has three members in the Rajya Sabha from the state. Following the elections, it is expected that Congress would only maintain possession of one Rajya Sabha seat, which is now occupied by State Party Chief Shaktisinh Gohil. The tenures of Amee Yagnik and Naran Rathwa, who are now serving as Rajya Sabha members, are scheduled to end on April 2nd of this year.

The forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat have considerable importance, not only in selecting the representation of influential political actors, but also in moulding the political terrain of the state. The BJP’s numerical superiority and the Congress’ effort to maintain its position add complexity to the election storyline, making it a highly anticipated political event in the next days.v
