Surat | Gujarat — The residents of the diamond city of Surat are all set to get a huge bonanza from the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on the 75th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17. For the first time in the country, SMC is set to launch a green vehicle policy in Surat with the aim of giving big time relief in the vehicle tax on Electric Vehicles (EVs).

As per the policy, EV vehicles ranging from Rs.1.50 lakh bikes to 25 lakh cars will get a direct benefit of 3000 to 1 lakh. Thus, after becoming a clean city, Surat is now going to become a green city, taking a giant leap as being the model city in India.

‘Green Vehicle Policy’ to be implemented on PM Modi’s birthday

Amidst the growing challenges of global warming and global concerns about air pollution, Surat Municipal Corporation has taken a revolutionary initiative by implementing the “Green Vehicle Policy”. This policy will be implemented on September 17, the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The main objective of this policy is to reduce pollution in the city and promote the use of electric, hydrogen, and bio-fuel based vehicles. This policy will not only promote eco-friendly mobility, but it will also provide a model for other cities in the country. Under this policy, citizens who purchase green vehicles will be given a vehicle tax exemption for five years.

Attractive benefits to citizens in this policy

This policy prepared by Surat Municipal Corporation has provided attractive benefits to citizens so that they adopt eco-friendly vehicles instead of conventional vehicles. The benefits of this policy are not limited to electric vehicles only, but also include hydrogen, bio-fuel and other alternative technologies.

Buyers of green vehicles will be exempted from environmental charges during the policy period. In addition, 10% parking spaces will be reserved for green vehicles in the parking lots managed by the municipal corporation. This facility will also ease the parking problem and promote the use of eco-friendly vehicles.

A big step in the field of clean energy

Surat’s “Green Vehicle Policy” is not limited to electric vehicles only, but also keeps in mind the clean energy sources of the future. The aim of this policy is to promote mobility based on hydrogen, bio-fuel and ethanol blended fuel. As part of this policy, Surat Municipal Corporation has also planned to run hydrogen buses on a pilot basis, which is a big step in the field of clean energy.

Now e-autos will be given priority

The policy also places special emphasis on e-auto rickshaws. In future, a system is being made so that only e-auto rickshaws are registered in the RTO. A joint committee of the municipality, collector and RTO officials will decide in this regard. This initiative will significantly reduce the pollution caused by rickshaws in the city. Earlier, registration of CNG rickshaws was made mandatory in 2006, but now e-autos will be given priority.

Two and a half percent of the country’s total e-vehicles registered in Surat

Surat Municipal Corporation is taking an important initiative to protect the environment by increasing the number of e-vehicles in the city. Giving information about this entire scheme, Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal said that 30% of the total e-vehicles in the state of Gujarat are in Surat city, while two and a half percent of the country’s total e-vehicles are registered in Surat. She added that this new policy will significantly increase the number of e-vehicles and will be extremely environment-friendly. This scheme will make Surat stronger in the field of e-mobility.

Surat will be made one of the leading cities in the country in the field of environmental protection

Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal announced the formulation of this policy under the “Green Growth Initiative” in the financial budget for 2025-26. This policy has been prepared with the help of international experts like the Government of India, Government of Gujarat and GIZ, which shows its global quality. This policy will make Surat one of the leading cities of the country in the field of environmental protection.

Surat became the first in the country to run 100% electric buses

Surat Municipal Corporation had earlier achieved the distinction of becoming the first in the country to run 100% electric buses in the BRTS corridor. Now this distinction is being further enhanced through the “Green Vehicle Policy”. This is a revolutionary step that will propel Surat on the path of environment-friendly and sustainable development and will become a source of inspiration for other cities.
