Diamond tycoon, Govind Dholakia underwent successful liver transplant surgery in Surat.

Surat : Govind Dholakia, founder and chairman of the Shree Ramkrishna Exports Private Limited (SRK) underwent the liver transplant surgery at the city-based Kiran Hospital at Katargam.

Sources in the Dholakia family said the liver transplant surgery was successful and that Govind Dholakia is recuperating at the Kiran Hospital. This was the first liver transplant surgery performed at Surat’s Kiran Hospital by Dr Ravi Mohanka, one of the most well renowned liver transplant surgeons in India with an experience of over 2,000 transplants in 15 years.

Dholakiya was suffering from liver disorder since 2018. This was detected during the hernia operation, which he underwent in 2018. Two months ago, Dholakiya suffered with jaundice and that he was hospitalised and was cured from the illness. However, the liver further got damaged due to the illness.

The Dholakiya family took the advice from the renowned doctors in Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and London hospitals and finally decided to go for the liver transplant at the Surat-based Kiran Hospital.

Dholakia who is popularly known as ‘Dada’ (grandfather) in the diamond industry and close circles has become the first liver transplant patient who underwent successful transplant surgery in Surat’s hospital.

Sources said Dholakia received cadaver donation of the liver from brain dead Ranjan Pravin Chavda, 40, a resident of Manek Baug in Valsad’s Segvi village on October 2. Ranjan’s family members donated her vital organs including liver, kidneys, and corneas, and save the lives of five patients, who were in dire need of organ transplantation, through the city-based NGO working for cadaver donation, Donate Life.

According to the volunteers of Donate Life, Ranjan Chavda was a yoga teacher in Valsad. She met with an accident, while she was going to her sister’s place in Valsad, on the Valsad-Dharampur Chowkdy on September 30. The victim had sustained serious brain injuries and that she was shifted to the Valsad-based Lotus hospital, where her CT scan report suggested severe brain hemorrhage, blood clotting in the brain, and fracture.
