Ahmedabad : In a distressing turn of events, cybercriminals have targeted two Gujarati families in separate incidents, attempting to extort money through fake kidnapping threats. These incidents, highlighting the pervasive reach of cybercrime, have left the affected families shaken and prompted immediate police action to apprehend the perpetrators.

In the first case, the family of a young Gujarati student pursuing studies in Toronto, Canada, was plunged into turmoil when they received a chilling call from an individual claiming to be a police officer. The impostor alleged that the student and his two roommates were implicated in a serious crime—gang-raping a girl in Toronto.

Threats to publicize the fabricated accusations unless a ransom was paid added to the family’s distress. Shockingly, the cybercriminals possessed detailed information about the student’s whereabouts, including his address, college name, and the identities of his roommates. The situation escalated when the family received a video call demanding immediate payment before abruptly disconnecting.

Thankfully, the family managed to contact their son, who, unbeknownst to the extortionists, was safe and sound at a salon during the incident. In a crucial turn of events, the family captured the Display Picture (DP) associated with the number used to make the ransom call, revealing images of individuals purporting to be IPS officers—a revelation that has raised serious concerns and prompted further investigation by the authorities.

In the second incident, a Gujarati family residing in Mumbai found themselves targeted by cybercrooks who claimed to have abducted their son. Demanding ransom from the distressed family, the criminals intensified the psychological pressure. However, the family’s quick thinking and resourcefulness came to their rescue as they sought assistance from a police acquaintance. With prompt action from the police, the boy was contacted, confirming his safety and dispelling the fabricated threats.

“The ease with which cybercriminals can obtain personal information and orchestrate elaborate scams poses a significant threat to individuals and families worldwide. Law enforcement agencies are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to prevent falling victim to such nefarious schemes” said a senior police officer.

As investigations into these incidents continue, authorities are working tirelessly to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, ensuring that justice is served and the safety of the public is safeguarded against the ever-evolving threat of cybercrime.
