Rajkot | Gujarat — The campus of Saurashtra University turned into a flashpoint on Tuesday as Congress leaders and student activists staged a fierce protest against alleged corruption in the education department. Raising slogans and chanting Ramdhun, protesters demanded the resignation of the Vice Chancellor and slammed the government for failing to address recruitment issues, high fees, and delays in examination results.

The agitation, which began peacefully, escalated when activists clashed with the police. Windows of the university building were broken, forcing the police to intervene with a lathi-charge. Several activists were detained as they attempted to storm administrative offices.

Allegations of Corruption and Negligence

According to Congress leaders, the protest at Saurashtra University was triggered by mounting anger over issues such as the GCAS portal irregularities, lack of permanent recruitment, and steep fees that burden students from poor families. Protesters also highlighted the university’s repeated failure to release results on time, leaving thousands of students uncertain about their academic future.

“This is not just a protest; it is a fight for the rights of students,” said one Congress worker. “We have been raising these issues for months—corruption in recruitment, high fees, delayed results—but no action is taken. Today, when we raised our voice, the police beat us and tried to silence us. If our demands are ignored, we will intensify the protest.”

Clash With Police

The situation turned tense when activists tried to march towards the Vice Chancellor’s office. Police resorted to batons to disperse the crowd, leading to injuries among protesters. Detainees alleged that they were brutally beaten despite holding a peaceful Ramdhun demonstration.

One detained student said, “We were protesting peacefully with Ramdhun, but the administration unleashed police brutality on us. Instead of addressing corruption, they are targeting students. We will not be silenced.”

Demands and Warning of More Protests

The protesters demanded:

Immediate resignation of the Vice Chancellor.

Transparency in the recruitment process.

Reduction in fees to ease student burden.

Timely declaration of results.

Congress leaders warned that if the administration fails to act, protests will spread beyond Rajkot. “If the government thinks it can muzzle student voices with batons, it is mistaken. This is just the beginning,” a Congress leader declared.
