Ahmedabad : A violent altercation erupted on Tuesday night at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in Ahmedabad, leaving passengers shaken and airport authorities scrambling for solutions.

Video footage captured the disturbing scene, which began with a heated argument between security personnel and auto-rickshaw drivers in the arrival area. The situation quickly escalated to physical violence as a rickshaw driver reportedly assaulted a security guard.

According to reports, the incident stemmed from tensions that have been simmering for months between auto-rickshaw drivers and airport security.  On Tuesday night, the issue allegedly began with intoxicated rickshaw drivers aggressively soliciting passengers for rides at the airport, a violation of airport regulations. Security personnel intervened to prevent this solicitation, known as touting. Following this interaction, some rickshaw drivers reportedly proceeded to the arrival area, where the argument erupted and culminated in the assault.

This incident is not an isolated one.  Airport authorities have confirmed that this is the latest episode in a string of confrontations between security guards and auto-rickshaw drivers over the past five months. In previous altercations, a security guard was also assaulted after attempting to stop drivers from harassing passengers.

Reacting to the latest incident, the airport authorities have condemned the violence and taken immediate action. An application has already been submitted to the police, and a formal complaint is being prepared. The hope is that a strong police presence will deter future altercations and ensure the safety of both passengers and airport staff.

This ongoing dispute highlights the need for a clear and well-defined system for auto-rickshaw services at the airport. Passengers arriving in Ahmedabad deserve a safe and secure experience, free from harassment or intimidation.  A system that ensures fair and organized access for passengers while maintaining order at the airport is crucial.

“Collaborative efforts with local transport authorities and auto-rickshaw driver unions could be a potential solution. Implementing a designated pick-up zone for rickshaws, complete with a clear queuing system and fare regulations, could help to prevent future confrontations and create a more streamlined and professional environment for passenger transportation” said a police officer.
