Ahmedabad : After seven years, the Madhumalati Awas Yojana area on Nikol-Kathwada Road in Ahmedabad once again witnessed boat rescue operations due to heavy rainfall. The incident brought back memories of 2017 when former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had to inspect the flooded area by boat. This time, heavy rains on August 26 turned the housing scheme into a virtual island, forcing the Ahmedabad Fire Brigade to conduct a rescue operation using boats.

The torrential downpour submerged the Madhumalati Housing Scheme in waist-deep water, stretching over a kilometer. Over 1,000 residents found themselves trapped in their homes as the water levels rose, rendering the roads impassable. The situation became particularly dire for a young man who fell seriously ill with high fever. Unable to leave his waterlogged home, his family had no choice but to seek emergency assistance.

Responding to the call, a team from the Nicol Fire Station arrived at the scene with a rescue boat. The fire brigade staff carefully evacuated the sick youth from his home, navigating through the flooded streets to bring him to safety and ensure he received medical attention. The rescue team also assisted a family of six, including four young children, who were trapped in their home by the rising water. After a tense and challenging operation lasting nearly five hours, the fire brigade successfully rescued all six individuals and brought them to safety.

The area affected by the flood extends beyond the housing scheme, with nearly two kilometers of surrounding land submerged under water. The flooding created significant challenges for residents, particularly in the eastern parts of the city, including Saraspur and Rakhial. Although the Janmashtami holiday meant that fewer people needed to travel, the situation was still severe enough to prompt concerns for the safety of the affected population.

Despite the scale of the flooding, the fire brigade’s boats and machinery were not deployed in all flooded areas. However, the emergency services did deliver food packets, water, and biscuits to the trapped residents of Madhumalati Awas Yojana, ensuring that their basic needs were met during the ordeal.
