AHMEDABAD : A simple email from Australia led to the recovery of ₹11 lakh, proving that swift police action can restore both stolen money and public trust. The Amreli Cyber Crime Police in Gujarat have won praise after recovering the entire amount lost by a Sydney-based Indian in a gold purchase fraud, showcasing the effectiveness of prompt cyber crime investigations.

The victim, Saurabh Jolly, an Indian originally from New Delhi and now living in Sydney, Australia, had transferred ₹11 lakh in April 2026 to a person in Amreli for the purchase of gold. However, the promised gold was never delivered. Concerned about pursuing a case while living overseas, Jolly approached the Amreli Police through an email complaint in June.

Amreli Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kharat said the police acted immediately after receiving the complaint.

“As soon as we received his complaint via email, we launched an investigation, coordinated with the concerned bank, and assured him of our full support. Our Cyber Crime Team remained in constant touch with the complainant throughout the investigation,” Kharat said.

The investigation resulted in the full recovery of ₹11 lakh, which was returned to Jolly’s bank account in July.

Police Inspector Kamlesh Khatana of the Amreli Cyber Crime Police said the team continuously pursued the matter with the recipient of the money.

“The amount was transferred for a gold purchase, but the seller failed to deliver the gold. We asked the recipient to return the money, and the entire amount was refunded,” Khatana said.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi has directed Gujarat Police to provide immediate assistance to victims of cyber fraud and make every effort to recover their hard-earned money.

Expressing gratitude, Jolly praised the Amreli Cyber Crime Team for its professionalism and regular communication despite the geographical distance.

“The team’s commitment ensured I never felt disconnected from the investigation. Their prompt action has strengthened my faith in Gujarat Police,” he said.

The successful recovery highlights how timely intervention, coordinated investigation, and proactive policing can deliver justice even in cross-border financial fraud cases.
