AM/NS India launches automotive steel line in Surat

Surat | Gujarat — Surat has taken a major step toward becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse with ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) commissioning a cutting-edge automotive steel production line at its Hazira plant. The Pickling Line and Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM) was inaugurated by Japan’s Ambassador to India, Keiichi Ono, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey toward advanced steel self-sufficiency.

With a capacity of 2 million tonnes annually, the new facility will manufacture high-quality cold-rolled base steel designed for next-generation vehicles. The line is expected to play a crucial role in domestic production of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), reducing reliance on imports and strengthening supply chains for India’s rapidly expanding automotive sector.

The facility integrates advanced automation, world-class process technology, and global quality benchmarks derived from ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel’s technical expertise. It is designed to produce steel for AHSS, galvanised and galvannealed applications, as well as press-hardened steel—critical materials that enhance vehicle safety, performance, and fuel efficiency while meeting Bharat NCAP safety norms.

Speaking at the inauguration, Ambassador Keiichi Ono highlighted the deepening industrial partnership between India and Japan, noting that Japanese technology and investment continue to complement India’s growing manufacturing strength. He expressed confidence that the collaboration would support India’s “Make in India, Make for the World” vision.

AM/NS India CEO Dilip Oommen said the new automotive line aligns with the company’s ₹60,000-crore expansion at Hazira and its commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. He emphasised that the facility will help manufacture high-grade automotive steel domestically, improve supply resilience, and accelerate the shift toward lighter and safer mobility solutions.

India’s demand for high-quality automotive flat steel stands at 7.8 million tonnes per year and is projected to grow steadily. As the country aims to rise from the world’s third-largest vehicle producer to second place, the Hazira expansion positions Surat and Gujarat at the heart of the global automotive supply chain.
