Ahmedabad | Gujarat — Ahmedabad took a major step towards environmental sustainability on World Environment Day as Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the Mission Five Million Trees campaign, setting an ambitious target of planting 50 lakh trees across the city during 2026-27.

The initiative, led by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), aims to significantly expand the city’s green cover, improve air quality, and combat the growing impact of the Urban Heat Island Effect caused by rapid urbanisation and rising temperatures.

Alongside the plantation drive, the Chief Minister flagged off a state-of-the-art Mobile Source Apportionment Laboratory developed under the Smart Sensing and Digital Intelligence Project. The mobile laboratory will scientifically identify and map major pollution sources across Ahmedabad, enabling authorities to implement targeted measures for improving air quality.

Patel also inaugurated the Miyawaki-based Clong-On Forest Development Project, designed to create dense urban forests and strengthen ecological resilience within the city.

Addressing the growing challenge of prolonged heat retention in urban areas, AMC officials highlighted that increasing green cover is one of the most effective solutions to reduce temperatures and improve the quality of life for citizens.

Ahmedabad has recorded impressive plantation figures over the past seven years. The city planted over 11.66 lakh trees in 2019-20, rising steadily to approximately 41.16 lakh trees during 2025-26. Building on this momentum, AMC has now set its highest-ever annual target of 50 lakh plantations.

As part of the campaign, intensive plantation drives will be carried out along roads, central dividers, gardens, public spaces, and vacant urban land. Special attention will be given to identified pollution hotspots to help improve the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI).

To ensure greater community participation, AMC will promote initiatives such as Green Volunteer, Memorial Park, and Green Society through the AMC Seva mobile application. Citizens can register through the app to request free tree plantation services in their homes, residential societies, and neighbourhoods.

AMC has also partnered with various organisations through PPP, CSR, and CER initiatives to support plantation activities and long-term maintenance of green spaces.

The launch event at Chandkheda witnessed participation from ministers, elected representatives, AMC officials, and citizens, reinforcing Ahmedabad’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable urban development.
