AHMEDABAD: A 17-year-old girl from Narol died after entering the Sabarmati River on August 10, following an alleged marital dispute, prompting Riverfront West police to register a case against her husband based on a video she recorded before her death.
According to the complaint filed by the girl’s father, the teenager had married Fardeen Sheikh around six months ago after the two were reportedly in a relationship. The couple initially lived together in Anand, but differences developed between them.
The family alleged that Fardeen asked her to leave the house on August 3. She subsequently returned to her parental home in Narol.
Police said the girl remained distressed and repeatedly contacted her husband, asking him to allow her to return. On August 10, she reportedly became emotional while looking at her wedding photographs and again spoke to him.
“She told him that she was willing to live according to his wishes and requested him to take her back, but he allegedly refused,” the complaint stated.
Later that morning, the girl left home saying she was upset. She went to the Sabarmati Riverfront, where she recorded a video and sent it to her sister before entering the river.
Her family began searching for her after receiving the video. Around 3pm, a body was spotted in the Sabarmati. Fire brigade personnel recovered it, and police subsequently identified the deceased as the teenager.
The body was sent for post-mortem before being handed over to the family.
Riverfront West police have registered a case against Fardeen based on the complaint and the contents of the video. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the marriage, the alleged marital dispute and communications between the couple before the teenager’s death.
“The allegations and circumstances leading to the death are being investigated. Further action will be taken based on the evidence collected,” police said.
