SURAT : Public anger over Surat’s flood crisis is no longer directed only at the administration. It has now reached elected representatives. In a dramatic scene in Kapodra on Saturday night, BJP corporator Hansa Gajera was surrounded and heckled by angry residents, especially women, who accused civic authorities of abandoning them after devastating floods left societies waterlogged and without drinking water.
The confrontation came days after heavy rain and creek flooding crippled several parts of Surat. Residents said they had been struggling for hours without clean drinking water while floodwater continued to stagnate inside residential societies.
As Hansa Gajera, corporator from Ward No. 4, arrived in Kapodra to hear public grievances, angry women immediately confronted her. Many accused elected representatives of visiting frequently during elections but remaining absent when people needed help the most.
“You came to our society ten times asking for votes. Now, when we are suffering, you don’t even show your face,” one resident told the corporator during the heated exchange.
Eyewitnesses said the women surrounded Gajera from all sides and questioned why no alternative drinking water arrangements had been made despite the worsening crisis.
As tempers flared, the corporator appealed to residents to remain calm. However, the crowd grew more agitated. In a moment of visible frustration, Gajera reportedly remarked, “I don’t want to get involved in this, otherwise I will remove everything right now,” before attempting to leave the spot.
Videos of the confrontation have since gone viral on social media, reflecting growing public resentment over the city’s handling of post-flood relief.
