Ahmedabad — In a major show of strength ahead of a renewed political battle over agrarian issues, tens of thousands of farmers from across Gujarat gathered on Monday for the Congress-led Kisan Adhikar Rally, with a convoy of 1,111 tractors rolling out from Shantipura Chowkdi in Ahmedabad. The rally, backed by more than 20 farmer organisations, sought to highlight growing concerns over debt, land acquisition, compensation and agricultural livelihoods, while issuing a direct challenge to the state government.

The Kisan Adhikar Yatra was scheduled to proceed towards Gandhinagar, although Congress leaders said permission had not been granted for the tractor march to reach the state capital. The rally was instead expected to culminate in a massive farmers’ convention at Shatabdi Mahotsav Maidan in Oganaj.

Farmers from districts across Gujarat arrived in large numbers, many bringing decorated tractors carrying slogans and symbolic displays. One farmer from Morbi attracted attention with a plough mounted on his vehicle and artwork carrying the message, “Khedut Ramke Toh Desh Ramke,” underscoring the central role of farmers in the nation’s economy.

The yatra was coordinated by Seva Dal President Lalji Desai, Pal Ambalia, Jayesh Patel, Mahesh Rajkotia and Gujarat Congress Working President Jignesh Mevani. Senior Congress leaders Dr. Tushar Chaudhary and Gujarat Congress President Amit Chavda were among those slated to address the gathering.

Addressing the media, Dr. Tushar Chaudhary said the farmers were seeking immediate intervention on critical issues. “Our first demand is complete waiver of farmers’ debt. Secondly, the government should procure farmers’ produce at full support price. We are also raising the issue of private power companies installing electricity poles in farmers’ fields without adequate consultation or compensation,” he said.

Chaudhary alleged that such projects significantly reduce the value of agricultural land and leave farmers feeling unheard. “Farmers are suffering extensive losses. Their concerns are not being addressed, which is why they have taken out this rally today,” he added.

The rally also received support from the Aam Aadmi Party, with state leaders, including MLA Gopal Italia, joining the movement. AAP leaders said they would stand “shoulder to shoulder” with farmers until their grievances are resolved.

Congress leaders stated that an ultimatum would be submitted to the government on five key demands, including debt waiver, free electricity, fair compensation for land acquisition and MSP-related issues. They warned that if the demands are ignored, farmers could launch an indefinite sit-in protest in Gandhinagar in the coming days.
