SURAT — From the bustling streets of Varachha in Surat to one of the world’s most prestigious fashion platforms, 25-year-old designer Vishal Desai has scripted a remarkable success story. In a milestone moment for Indian fashion, Desai became the only designer from India to receive an official invitation to showcase his collection at the internationally acclaimed Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW), placing Gujarat’s rich cultural heritage under the global spotlight.
Representing his label, “Desi Vogue by Vishal,” the young designer unveiled his latest collection, *“Riwaayat – Threads of Rabari Heritage,”* a tribute to the traditional artistry of the Rabari community. The collection captivated international audiences by seamlessly blending centuries-old handicrafts with contemporary fashion silhouettes, creating a unique fusion of tradition and modernity.
“I belong to the Rabari community, and this art form has been a part of my identity since childhood,” Vishal Desai said. “Through ‘Riwaayat,’ I wanted to show the world that our ancestral craftsmanship is not just heritage—it can also define the future of global fashion.”
The collection featured intricate mirror work, geometric embroidery, vibrant thread artistry, handmade tassels and traditional Kodi shells, all crafted entirely by hand. Desai’s creations reimagined these traditional elements on structured jackets, premium denim and modern Western-inspired designs, earning praise from international fashion critics, buyers and industry experts.
What makes Desai’s journey even more inspiring is his commitment to preserving local craftsmanship. Rejecting mass production, he relies on traditional artisanship and a close-knit team that includes his mother and three sisters. Together, they transform indigenous handicrafts into high-fashion creations while supporting sustainable and ethical fashion practices.
“Our goal is not only to create beautiful garments but also to protect and promote traditional crafts that are slowly disappearing,” Desai said. “Every handcrafted piece carries the story of a community and its culture.”
The MBFW achievement follows another major international success for Desai. In November 2025, he emerged as a winner at Dubai Emirates Fashion Week, a recognition that helped pave the way for his selection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Despite his growing global reputation, Desai remains firmly rooted in Surat. Looking ahead, he plans to expand the footprint of “Desi Vogue by Vishal” across India while establishing a presence in leading fashion capitals such as Paris, Milan and New York.
“Surat will always be my foundation,” he said. “This is just the beginning of a much larger journey.”
Vishal Desai’s rise from Hira Baug to the world’s elite runways stands as a powerful example of how local artistry, cultural authenticity and visionary talent can redefine global luxury fashion.
