Surat | Gujarat — In a dramatic and closely watched election, young industrialist Ravi Raj Desai has been elected as Vice President of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SGCCI), securing a massive victory margin of 1288 votes and marking a generational shift in Surat’s business leadership.
Desai defeated his rival, Congress leader Nitin Bharucha, in a decisive mandate that underlined strong support from the business community. Out of 2686 valid votes, Desai secured 1887 votes while Bharucha managed only 599, failing to retain his deposit.
Returning Officer Vijay Mewawala announced the result after a swift 25-minute counting process, confirming Desai’s emphatic win.
“This victory is not mine alone; it reflects the trust of the entire business community in young leadership and fresh ideas,” said Ravi Raj Desai after the results were declared. “I will work to strengthen industry growth and ensure SGCCI becomes more dynamic and future-ready.”
The election witnessed steady voting throughout the day, with a total turnout of 2705 votes cast between 9 am and 5 pm. The final result also highlighted a strong preference for continuity and youth-driven leadership within the chamber.
At just 33 years of age, Desai has now become the youngest Vice President in the 86-year history of SGCCI, and is widely seen as a future contender for the presidency next year.
According to observers, the contest also saw intense pre-election developments, with rival camps attempting last-minute efforts to disqualify Desai. However, he remained firmly in the race and secured a decisive public mandate.
The newly elected SGCCI office bearers for 2026–27 include President Ashok Jirawala, Vice President Ravi Raj Desai, Secretary Paresh Lathiya, and Treasurer Atul Patel.
