Google has announced one of the most significant transformations to its search engine in years, introducing a wave of AI-powered features designed to make online searching more automated, conversational, and personalized.

During the annual Google I/O developer conference, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai revealed major updates across Google Search, Gemini AI, and other services as the company accelerates its push into the artificial intelligence era.

The centerpiece of the update is a redesigned search experience powered by Google’s latest Gemini 3.5 Flash AI model. Instead of simply displaying traditional blue links, the upgraded search engine can now understand longer, more natural questions and even perform tasks on behalf of users.

Google is also introducing AI “agents” that can independently monitor topics over time. For example, users can ask Google to track sneaker launches from favorite athletes, monitor apartment listings, or follow product announcements without repeatedly searching manually.

The company says the new search system can also generate interactive visuals and mini applications instantly. Users may create customized tools such as fitness trackers that combine local weather, maps, and connected Google account data into one interface.

Alongside search improvements, Google announced a new Gemini feature called “Spark,” which allows the AI assistant to work continuously in the background. Spark can monitor inboxes, summarize documents, track expenses, create to-do lists, and compile information across Google Docs, Gmail, and Slides.

Google is also expanding Gemini’s capabilities on Mac computers, allowing it to interact with local files, while a new Android feature called “Halo” lets users monitor AI tasks directly from their smartphones even when devices are locked.

The company’s latest moves place Google in direct competition with AI-focused companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, whose AI assistants have increasingly replaced traditional search and browsing habits for many users.

Executives at Google DeepMind acknowledged that fully autonomous AI systems still face reliability challenges, but the company believes rapid improvements will eventually lead toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), where AI systems can perform tasks at human-level intelligence across many domains.

According to Google, Gemini now has more than 900 million active users worldwide. Parent company Alphabet also plans to spend between $180 billion and $190 billion this year on AI infrastructure, data centers, and chips to support its growing AI ecosystem.

Despite concerns around job displacement, AI safety, and environmental impact, Google is making artificial intelligence the core of its future strategy as competition in the global AI race intensifies.
