Surat | Gujarat — Surat’s long-awaited Metro dream has taken a major leap forward, with more than 75% of the ambitious ₹12,020 crore project now complete and trial runs beginning on the East–West corridor. The milestone signals that the city is moving rapidly towards a modern, safe and efficient public transport system.

Officials confirmed that structural work on 6.5 km and seven stations of Corridor-2 has been completed, marking a crucial step in bringing the project closer to reality.
Massive Infrastructure Nearing Completion
The Surat Metro project spans 40.35 km across two corridors, featuring 38 stations and two depots at Dream City and Bhesan. Authorities say the pace of work reflects strong focus from both the Centre and the Gujarat government.
A senior official said the project aligns with the vision of creating world-class transport systems in Indian cities.
“Metro connectivity is essential for fast-growing cities like Surat. The project is progressing at a steady pace and we are committed to completing it on schedule.”
Trial Runs Expand to East–West Corridor
Trial operations had already begun on March 29, 2026, along the 8.5 km stretch between Dream City and Althan Tenement Station on the North–South corridor. Now, similar testing has started on the East–West corridor.
The trial phase involves running trains for nearly 500 hours to evaluate safety, system performance, and operational readiness. Engineers and experts from the General Engineering Consultant (GEC) and Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) are currently conducting rigorous verification tests.
Officials explained the next steps in the process.
“After internal testing, inspections will be carried out by RDSO and other regulatory agencies. Final safety clearance will come from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety,” an official said.
Boost for Urban Mobility
Once operational, the metro is expected to transform daily commuting in Surat by reducing traffic congestion and travel time while offering eco-friendly transport options.
Urban planners say the project will play a crucial role in supporting Surat’s rapid population and economic growth. With expanding industries and rising traffic pressure, the metro is expected to become a backbone of the city’s future mobility network.
