Surat | Gujarat — The diamond city of Surat is witnessing a disturbing trend of increasing road accidents in a couple of years, prompting the city police and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to intensify enforcement. Now, wrong-side driving, overspeeding, and helmet violations by the vehicle owners will meet with strict penalties, including suspension of driving licenses.

According to officials, the police have shifted from on-the-spot fines to long-term deterrent measures aimed at reducing reckless driving. “Surat’s road safety cannot improve unless we enforce discipline. Drivers who break the law will now face suspension of their licenses without exception,” said a senior Surat Police officer.

License Suspension Becomes Key Tool in Enforcement

Data from the RTO reveals that in the last two years alone, 1,465 driving licenses have been suspended for various traffic violations in Surat city. The crackdown has gained further momentum in 2025.

In the first months of 2025, 235 licenses have already been suspended, of which 175 were suspended for three months, while 60 licenses faced a six-month suspension. These harsher six-month actions are typically reserved for more serious offences such as fatal accidents and cases involving drink-and-drive.

Officials say the sharper enforcement aims to reduce the growing culture of risky shortcuts and high-speed riding. “People often underestimate the danger of wrong-side driving or skipping a helmet. These minor lapses can cost lives,” an RTO official said.

2024 Saw 1,230 Licenses Suspended

In 2024, the RTO suspended 1,230 driving licenses, including 1,138 for three months and 92 for six months, reflecting a continuous effort to penalize high-risk behaviour on the roads.

Surat Police said the campaign will intensify further in 2025, with special drives, surprise checks, and coordination between traffic police stations and RTO squads.

Authorities urge citizens to follow basic traffic rules to protect themselves and others on the road. “Suspension is not punishment—it’s a warning,” officials added. “Safety must come before convenience.”
