Nepal Gen-Z Movement Triggers Diwali Tour Cancellations from Surat

Surat | Gujarat — The ongoing Gen-Z movement in Nepal has started impacting Gujarat’s festive tourism industry, with nearly 200 Diwali tour packages from Surat and South Gujarat already canceled. According to the South Gujarat Association of Travels (SGAT), more than 800 tourists have inquired whether they should withdraw their Nepal plans, sparking concern among travel agents.

Every year, over 4,000 tourists from Surat flock to Nepal’s popular destinations such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini and Muktidham during the Diwali holidays. But this year, political unrest and uncertainty triggered by the Gen-Z movement have cast a shadow over festive travel.

A leading travel agent from Surat explained, “In just one day, 20% of our Nepal-bound tourists indicated they would cancel their trips. While we are advising a ‘wait-and-watch’ approach, at least 5% have already canceled.”

If the current situation persists, industry insiders warn that cancellations could surge to 60% within the next two weeks, causing an estimated loss of ₹10.80 crore to South Gujarat’s travel industry.

SGAT, which represents over 180 travel operators in the region, is struggling to retain customer confidence. Its spokesperson said, “Tourism is highly sensitive to political instability. We are closely monitoring the situation in Nepal. If peace returns, we expect travelers to reconsider. But if unrest continues, this Diwali season will be a major setback.”

Credit Policy for Customers

To reduce financial burden on travelers, companies are offering a credit policy to customers who cancel their Nepal tour packages. This credit, equivalent to the package value, can be used for future bookings within six months, typically extending to summer vacation 2026. In exceptional cases—such as a death in the family—companies are prepared to extend this validity further.

A Surat-based tour operator shared, “We want to reassure our customers. Their money is safe with us. Even if they don’t travel this Diwali, they can use the credit for other tours later.”

Tour Package Rates

Currently, Nepal tour packages are priced as follows:

4 days/3 nights: ₹35,000 – ₹40,000

5 days/4 nights: ₹45,000 – ₹50,000

6 days/5 nights: ₹55,000 – ₹60,000

These packages usually include airfare, hotel stays, sightseeing, and meals. With demand dropping sharply, some agents fear they may also need to offer additional discounts to retain bookings.
