Gandhinagar | Gujarat — In a remarkable achievement for industrial safety, the Boiler Department of Gujarat has successfully inspected 100% of all registered boilers across the state, ensuring that not a single fatal accident has been reported in the past three years. The department, functioning under the direct supervision of the Labour Commissioner, plays a critical role in safeguarding lives and property in Gujarat’s vast manufacturing ecosystem.

With Gujarat emerging as a hub of manufacturing industries, the use of boilers has increased significantly in sectors such as textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and engineering. Recognising the risks involved, the Boiler Department has maintained strict vigilance through rigorous inspections and certifications.

23,719 Boilers and 675 Economizers Certified

According to official data, between 2022-23 and 2024-25, the department certified 23,719 boilers and 675 economizers. Over the same period, the state government allocated a budget of ₹22 crore, while inspection fees generated a revenue of more than ₹36 crore.

“This performance is not just about numbers—it reflects our commitment to worker safety, industrial efficiency, and public trust. By ensuring timely inspections and certifications, we have created a safer working environment for thousands of employees,” a senior Boiler Department official said.

Safety Without Disrupting Industry

The department has emphasised that safety measures have been implemented without hampering productivity. “Our aim is to protect both workers and property while ensuring industrial production is not disrupted. We provide legal protection and safety by effectively implementing the Boiler Act,” the official added.

The Boiler Act-2025 mandates that all boilers or steam generators with a volumetric capacity above 25 litres, operating at more than 1 kg/cm² pressure and heating water above 100°C, must be registered before use. Strict adherence to this law, officials said, has been central to Gujarat’s safety record.

Beyond Inspections: Energy Conservation and Skill Development

The Boiler Department’s role extends beyond safety checks. It also undertakes initiatives to conserve energy, safeguard the environment, and prevent loss of national wealth by avoiding accidents. Additionally, it certifies skilled manpower to operate boilers, thereby contributing to both safety and employment.

“The Boiler Department is not just a regulatory body—it’s a partner in progress. By ensuring industrial safety, conserving energy, and providing skilled professionals, it strengthens Gujarat’s position as a leader in manufacturing,” said a senior Labour Commissioner’s office representative.
