Gandhinagar Policeman Saves Young Couple from Suicide

The incident occurred around 1:30 pm near the Koba-Indira Bridge service road in the jurisdiction of Infocity Police Station in Gandhinagar. Gandhinagar | Gujarat —- A policeman’s quick thinking and fearless action turned into a life-saving moment on Monday afternoon when a young man and woman attempted to end their lives by jumping into the Narmada Canal near Nabhoi, in Gandhinagar district. The officer, who was on duty in the Chief Minister’s security detail, did not hesitate for a moment before jumping into the canal to rescue them.

The incident occurred around 1:30 pm near the Koba-Indira Bridge service road in the jurisdiction of Infocity Police Station. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Vishnubhai Naranbhai, while patrolling the area, noticed the duo leap into the canal. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he immediately dived into the water without waiting for backup.

Local residents, who had gathered at the spot, also joined the effort. With combined courage and swift action, the policeman and the bystanders managed to pull both the youngsters out safely.

Speaking about the incident, a local eyewitness said, “If the policeman had not jumped in immediately, it would have been impossible to save them. His bravery inspired everyone around to help.”

After the rescue, the couple was taken to ‘Jeevan Aastha Kendra’, a district-level counseling and support center for individuals in emotional distress. They received immediate counseling and were later reunited with their families.

Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghvi, lauded the bravery of ASI Vishnubhai. In a public message, he said, “This courageous and humane act by ASI Vishnubhai is an inspiring example of the dedication of Gujarat Police. He risked his own life to save two others, showcasing not only his duty but also his humanity.”

Police officials also praised the officer’s swift response, noting that his actions went beyond the call of duty. A senior police officer from Gandhinagar remarked, “Policing is not only about enforcing the law but also about saving lives. ASI Vishnubhai’s heroic act reinforces people’s faith in the police force.”

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of quick intervention in suicide prevention cases. Mental health experts stress that timely support, like counseling at centers such as Jeevan Aastha Kendra, plays a crucial role in helping individuals overcome such crises.
