Gujarat observes national road safety month 2025

Ahmedabad : To educate citizens on traffic rules and prevent road accidents, the National Road Safety Authority observed National Road Safety Month-2025 across Gujarat from January 1 to January 31. The month-long initiative focused on raising awareness, enforcing traffic laws, and addressing key causes of road accidents in the state.

During accident surveys and research conducted by the police, it was found that the leading causes of road accidents included rear-end collisions, malfunctioning tail and brake lights, overspeeding, wrong-side driving, lack of radium reflectors on vehicles, and unauthorized parking on roads. In response to these findings, a statewide special drive was launched to enhance public awareness and ensure better road safety measures.

As part of this initiative, over one lakh citizens received traffic awareness handbills, while more than 97,000 individuals were provided with educational pamphlets detailing traffic regulations. To improve visibility and minimize nighttime accidents, radium reflectors were installed on over 74,000 vehicles across the state. The campaign also reached out to highway users, with over 45,000 citizens participating in various awareness programs. Additionally, more than 15,000 individuals attended workshops focused on road safety, while 9,000 people received training related to highway regulations. Under the Road Safety Week initiative, over 3,000 citizens also benefited from free eye check-up camps, helping to identify and address vision-related issues that could contribute to road mishaps.

Alongside public awareness efforts, strict legal action was taken against traffic violations. More than 25,000 cases of overspeeding were recorded with the help of interceptor vehicles, and over 44,000 instances of unauthorized parking led to fines totaling over ₹2 crore. The authorities also registered 2,111 cases of drunk driving under the Motor Vehicles Act-185. Other violations, including failure to wear seat belts, not using helmets, overspeeding, and wrong-side driving, accounted for thousands of additional cases, with 26,000 drivers penalized for seat belt violations, over 88,000 fined for not wearing helmets, 24,000 booked for overspeeding, and 18,000 caught driving on the wrong side of the road.

A crucial aspect of the campaign was the focus on educating young people about traffic safety. In this effort, Gujarat Police conducted 677 awareness programs in schools and colleges across the state. These sessions provided road safety education to more than 1.20 lakh students, emphasizing the importance of following traffic rules from an early age.

With the successful implementation of National Road Safety Month-2025, Gujarat has taken a significant step toward creating safer roads through increased awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
