OpenAI is expanding advertisements in ChatGPT to more markets, with users in Europe and India beginning to see sponsored content as the company pushes further into AI-powered advertising.
The European rollout is scheduled to reach 31 countries from August 24, taking ChatGPT’s advertising programme to 40 markets globally. India has also entered the rollout, making it one of the latest major markets where ChatGPT users can encounter advertisements inside the chatbot experience.
Ads are expected to appear on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans, while users on Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions will continue to use the service without advertising.
OpenAI says advertisements will be clearly labelled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s answers. The company has also said advertisers will not receive access to users’ private conversations and that customer data will not be sold for advertising purposes.
The expansion is significant because ChatGPT is increasingly being used for product research, comparisons, recommendations and everyday decision-making. That makes advertising inside an AI conversation very different from traditional banner advertising or search ads.
Europe raises tougher regulatory questions
The European rollout comes as regulators examine how advertising should work inside conversational AI.
The EU’s AI Act prohibits certain forms of manipulative AI behaviour, raising questions about whether highly personalised advertising inside trusted conversations could eventually fall under closer scrutiny.
The European Commission is also considering whether ChatGPT’s search functionality could qualify as a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act. Such a designation would bring additional requirements around risk assessments, independent audits and advertising transparency.
For OpenAI, the expansion represents an important step towards turning ChatGPT into a larger advertising platform. For users, however, it also marks a significant change in how commercial content could appear inside an AI assistant.
As ChatGPT becomes increasingly embedded in everyday searches and decisions, the way OpenAI separates advertising from its answers could become just as important as the technology itself.
