Uttarardha Mahotsav-2025: A timeless collection of classical dance

Ahmedabad : The historic Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat is set to host the grand Uttarardha Mahotsav-2025 on January 18th and 19th, showcasing India’s rich classical dance heritage. This annual festival, celebrated with grandeur since 1992, will feature performances by world-renowned artists, highlighting classical dance forms such as Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, Manipuri, and Sattriya.

A Festival Rooted in Tradition

Uttarardha Mahotsav is intricately tied to the ancient traditions of Modhera. The festival marks the sun’s northward journey, celebrated after the festival of Uttarayan, as days begin to lengthen. The Sun Temple, an architectural marvel of ancient India, forms the perfect backdrop for this cultural extravaganza.

“The Sun Temple of Modhera is a testament to the engineering brilliance of our ancestors,” said an official from the Gujarat Department of Sports, Youth, and Cultural Activities. “Hosting the Uttarardha Mahotsav here is a tribute to our heritage and an opportunity to introduce the Guru-Shishya tradition of Indian classical dances to the public.”

A Platform for Renowned Artists

This year’s festival promises mesmerizing performances by artists from across the country. Each performance will celebrate the timeless elegance and spiritual depth of India’s classical dance forms.

Speaking about the event, noted Bharat Natyam dancer Geeta Chandran said, “Uttarardha Mahotsav is not just a festival; it’s a confluence of art, spirituality, and tradition. Performing at the Modhera Sun Temple is an honor for any artist.”

Organized Since 1992

A joint initiative by the Gujarat government’s Sports, Youth, and Cultural Activities Department and the district administration, the Uttarardha Mahotsav has been organized annually since 1992. Its aim is to preserve and promote India’s classical dance heritage while providing a platform for emerging and established artists alike.
